Olivon TRB-22 ball head.

The Olivon TRB-22 ball head is a great low cost solution for small cameras and spotting scopes.  A nice feature is the mounting plate, that can be inverted to become a flash hot shoe.

Olivon TRM-148 Monopod review

The Olivon TRM-148 is a high quality and sturdy aluminium mono-pod. Comes complete with a very good soft case.  Fully adjustable height from 55cm to 148cm. The top section has a useful “twist” tension grip. This is perfect for fine height adjustments. On testing, I could easily manage an 80mm spotting scope. OK, it wont hold it as steady as a tripod. But when a tripod is not an option, it is more than capable, and easy to lean on your shoulder when walking.

As well as a carry case, a wrist strap and an allen key is included. The allen key can be used to adjust the tension of the section levers.

The Monopod is extremely sturdy, and well on par with some other brands costing much more. The foam grip is excellent and helps prevent your hand slipping

For the photographer, and optional TRB-22 ball head can be added. This is perfect for mid sized cameras where you need to quickly move from landscape to portrait modes. The Ball head has a very useful feature, where you can invert the plate , where it becomes a flash hot shoe

Olivon TRH-16 tripod head review

To test the new Olivon TRH-16 head, I used on an Olivon TR189 tripod and mounted a 25×100 pair of binoculars weighing 4.7kg on top.

First thing that I noticed was the very small tension adjuster for the tilt. At first it seemed “not right” on a heavy duty tripod head. It soon became apparent that this was not an issue. I,m guessing that there are some clever “dampening springs” inside that help cushion the movement. End result is that even with 4.7kgs of binocular on board, you can set the tension very low, and the head stays nicely in place when you let go. This means you can move heavy binoculars , cameras and spotting scopes with a couple of fingers.

Both pan and tilt movements are silky smooth with no friction felt whatsoever. So I decided to put the dampening to the ultimate test and did something I would not normally recommend.  With the heavy binoculars on board, I moved them along the binocular central bar to make them extremely front heavy. I then set the tension to medium (this is what you would have them set on) and I let go. You would expect to hear the sound of broken glass on metal. But no. The dampening stopped the binoculars before they hit the tripod.

The TRH-16 is not only suitable for heavy optics, the feather touch movement will also make it ideal for lighter optics such as compact cameras.

No wonder this superb mount was featured in the BBC Sky at Night magazine. At under £100 (at the time of this review) it is well within many peoples budgets

Olivon TR154-11 tripod review

To put the Olivon TR-154-11 through its paces, I used a pair of 100mm binoculars. A pair of binoculars weighing 4.7kgs should be a test for any tripod. The TR-154 was up to the job.

The TR-154 comes packaged with an Olivon TRH-11 2-way head.  As well as being heavy duty, the head is easy and smooth to operate. I found with the large binoculars , they moved very fluently with the vertical adjuster set slack. Then when you have found the target, simply a quarter turn of the tension lever, and it stops exactly where you left it.

The head is simple to fix on to the tripod , and matches perfectly. The tripod head plate has a quick release and for added security has a locking pin. The handle can be adjusted to different angles, and can also be fixed on the opposite side of the head.

3 settings for the angle of the tripod legs mean that the TR-154 is also ideal for low level observing / photography, and can easily be rested up against a wall. A low level central column is available an an optional extra.

The tripod comes with a handy little set of tools for adjusting the tension of the leg releases. A foam grip on one leg makes varying more comfortable, and easier on the hands on cold days. A useful hook is on the underside for adding weights to aid stability.

Comes in a very atrractive mat / gloss black finish. At just £154.99 (at the time of this review) represents excellent value for money

Olivon TR-150 tripod (leg section) review

Today was my first chance to check the build quality of the Olivon TR-150 tripod (leg section). Before opening the box, I got my first surprise. Feels much more heavy (a good thing) than I was expecting.  Opening the box reveals a functional carry case.

Taking the tripod out, it feels like a quality piece of kit.  The leg sections are smooth to operate, and click nicely into position.  A foam grip on one leg is a handy addition.  Once fully opened, and the central spacers are locked, it feels very solid.

It is quoted as taking a load up to 8kg, so should be fine (with a good tripod head) to accept many scopes up to 100mm. The wind up column was silky smooth. I found it a little stiffer on the way down, but I,m sure this would improve with use

Available as a tripod only or complete with TRH-10 head

Hawke Nature-Trek 7×30 binoculars. Customer review

A customer came to the Northern Optics retail outlet with £60-£80 to spend on a general use pair of binoculars. Despite trying more expensive 8×42 and 8×25 binoculars, they were drawn back to the Hawke Nature-Trek 7×30 binoculars. Not because they were they cheapest at £69 (date of sale), but because they “felt right”.

Apart from the quality of optics and wide field of view, they got top marks for being easy to use and lightweight. The couple found the twist eye cups very easy and fast to operate. This was very useful, with one being a spectacle wearer and the other was not.

Despite only being 7x magnification, the couple found it very easy to pick out objects at a distance. The extreme wide field of view made finding moving targets easy
